Durable and sturdy door locks bring you peace of mind because they provide the maximum protection required to prevent criminals from entering a home.If your locked door won’t open, fighting it to break into your own home is a very frustrating and disappointing experience. Before deciding to invest in a brand new lock and key, you still have the chance to fix the door yourself.
First of all, you need to jimmy the lock using a flat, thin, but sturdy item like a putty knife or credit card, and attempt to access the angled side of the door. While the lock prevents the door handle from turning, the door latch is designed to recede into the door. Using a sturdy and flat tool, the lock will enable the door to be opened. Take note that doors with tight door jamb and deadbolt locks cannot be jimmied. If this is the case, lock replacement is necessary. Take off the hinges. For the doors that cannot be jimmied, it becomes necessary to remove the door from the hinges.
How to Remove Hinges
Between the top rung of the door's top hinge and the bolt’s head, insert a flat head screwdriver. Gently pry the bolt loose, lift it out on the hinge, and then hold the door in place. Repeat this process for the bottom hinge. Once free, remove the latch from the door frame, then reassemble the hinges to secure the door to the wall. Do this with firm and gentle motion as not to destroy the hinges.
Remove and Install Lock
Locate the screws and hold the lock in place. If the door handle has a malfunctioning lock, there will be 2 screws securing the door handle to the door. Do not forget to remove these screws by unscrewing one side of the door knob. Once done, pull the lock assembly and door handle out of the door. The way you remove a deadbolt is similar, but may only require removal of a single screw. Take note that if the troublesome door is an entry door, it becomes necessary to replace the broken lock immediately.
